Dr. R Plant

We have purchased flowers for Dr. R and his wife Judy in the name of First Year MFT Students to show our love and care for their family in this time of grief.  The coast was $50.00 and we were hoping that each first year student would contribute two dollars to help pay for the flowers.  Please contact Ryan Dunlap for your contribution. (of course we did this with out asking so if you don't want to pay I understand)

PSY 501 quiz

Has anyone taken the PSY 501 quiz yet? Jaimie and I were talking over last week's quiz, and we think that the questions from last week for Egan may have been from this week's reading (Ch 5) instead of Ch 4. We emailed Dr. R and Kiki just in case... but if anyone took the PSY 501 quiz for this week, did the Egan questions seem to be from the wrong chapter??

Need Help Covering Fish-bowl at 12:00 today.

Hey guys. I woke up this morning feeling "flu-ish" with aches, temp and nausea and such, I'm putting myself MIA today in hopes of nipping it in the bud. Can anyone sit in the fish-bowl for me at 12:00 noon? I would be glad to reciprocate the favor when I'm on the up and up.

Please just let me know: text me at 770-853-3602 or post on the blog.

Thanks a bunch,

Jason.

Switchfoot concert sept 29

going with the theme of B2M, and even though this band is no where close to the awesome power and indescribable musical force that is BoyZ2Men, there is a switchfoot concert coming up this next wed night @ Belhaven University @ the Concert Hall @ 7pm . Seeing how there aren't to many things to be entertained with in jackson MS, you might want to take this opportunity into consideration. If you are interested in going, go to this  website and order you tickets online or...get with me ( @ roe hunter)  next week i might have extra tickets. good luck with studies see you all in the morning @ ST1

another point to ponder.... why do we have a symbol for a two letter word spelled "at"?

No class

Dr. Richardson's father-in-law passed away today. This was not wholly unexpected, but still grieving non-the-less. He and Judy will be traveling to FL later today, and he will be gone for the rest of the week. Please say a prayer for Judy and Bill, and the rest of their family.

Classes with Dr. R today and tomorrow are canceled. Quizzes for both classes will be available in the MFT department area later today and will be available until the end of the week. Let Allison or I know if you have any questions about the quizzes.

fishbowl during reading week

I will be out of town during reading week and was told I need to get someone to work my fishbowl hour (thursday at 3) I will work yours the next week!! Any takers??

Boyz II Men!!!!!

OMG its BOYZ II MEN!!!!!!!!! Thursday Oct. 14th B2M will be playing at the Jackson Fair.
General Admission is $5, I am willing to go get tickets for everyone at a group discount rate of $3 each as long as you buy in sets of 6. Also, parking per car is $5 so if you are coming from RTS Carpooling is a great idea (don't make the driver cover that ;-)

SO If you want me to bring you a ticket I can, I just need to know who wants one and if you need more than 1 please let me know that also.

This should be crazy fun!

Reading Schedule Help

Hey guys, i constructed a reading schedule for myself but Im afraid I goofed on it because I used some incorrect/ old syllabuses. I believe there is a good one being shared that Stephanie created. Can someone e-mail that bad-boy to me? address is thejasonramey@gmail.com Thanks for the help!

The Weight of Glory

Here is the quote from Class. Under it is a link where you can find the entire sermon in text form. It is a wonderful read I highly suggest it.

quotes from The Weight of Glory, by C.S. Lewis...

There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations--these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit--immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of the kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously--no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinners--no mere tolerance, or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses. If he is your Christian neighbour, he is holy in almost the same way, for in him also Christ vere latitat, the glorifier and the glorified, Glory Himself, is truly hidden.

BAVINCK:
***Know attributes (communicable and incommunicable)---categorizations and basic ideas of each one
INCOMMUNICABLE à ex---independence, immutability, infinity, unity, simplicity (no subheadings as well)
COMMUNICABLEà ex---God’s Spiritual Natureà Corporeality & Anthropomorphism, Invisibility   Intellectual Attributesà Knowledge, Foreknowledge, and middle knowledge, wisdom, trustworthiness   Moral Attributesà Goodness, Holiness, Righteousness (Justice)  Attributes of Sovereigntyà God’s will as ultimate, Free and necessary will of God, Nominalism, The problem of Evil, Revealed and hidden will, Omnipotence   Perfection, Blessedness, and  Gloryà The glory of God

***Know the differences between INCOMMUNICABLE and COMMUNICABLE

***KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FOREKNOWLEDGE AND KNOWLEDGE—is there a difference (pg. 196 and summary)

***KNOW ABOUT SIMPLICITY!!!!!—last paragraph

***Middle Knowledge –main critique—God’s knowledge is not dependent on the world—ignores the aspect of God’s decree and providence---makes God dependent on man and our choices.

***KNOW ABOUT BAVINCK’s view of FATHERHOOD!!!!!!—In what sense God is father to different parts of creation
--How is he the Father to everyone?—father to all men, he created us  -vs- How is he the Father to believers?—To believers, he is our adopted father who has redeemed us!

***KNOW ABOUT GOD’S INFINITY----eternity—excludes beginning and end and no succession of moments (pg. 159 1st sentence of Infinity) (WHAT IS THIS) –vs- omnipresence—not being confined by space—God is creator and all that exists is and remains his in absolute sense (WHAT IS THIS) = both aspects of infinity  (pg. 162)

CALVIN:

---Holy Spirit is known through scripture---test it with scripture—doesn’t take away from the spirit, just shows the spirit’s consistency.

---How do we distinguish the true God from false gods?

We do have a quiz on Wednesday but it is going to be given in class..here's the email from Dr R.

the 501 course schedule 'says' no quiz this wednesday...it's lying. however, to minimize confusion the psy 501 carkhuff /egan quiz will take place IN-CLASS this week.

I hope that helps! =)

Encouragement

Hey family!

I have been encouraged by these verses the past few days and I thought that they would be good for you all to hear as well.  It helped me put things in perspective- priorities, anxities, etc.

Proverbs 16:3 - "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established."
Psalm 37:5 - " Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act."

So thankful for all of you!

Systematic quiz 3 answers- need help!

Ok, here is what I have... I am lacking specifically on numbers 3,6, and 8. If ya'll would be so kind as to assist me in this I would greatly appreciate it! Any thoughts would be great!
Thanks,
B

Quiz 3 Systematic Theology I
1.       Knowledge of God is the central, core system, the exclusive content of theology; knowledge of God leads to adoration and worship; Bavinck defines the knowledge of God as possible because He is personal yet shrouded in mystery- to know Him is to live
2.       Acquinas lists 3 types of knowledge of God:
1) Immediate vision of God
2) knowledge by faith
3) Knowledge by reason

a) He says that is ordinarily reserved for heaven; on earth all knowledge is mediate; God is knowable only in works- notably in the perfections of His creatures
b) I agree with Bavinck, that knowledge on this earth is mediated- immediate vision of Him will be in Heaven or when He returns
3.    Luther- God infinitely surpasses our understanding, imagination and language
4.    No; through revelation, we have a true knowledge of Him that is relative and finite rather than comprehensive
5.    Proofs= evidence of the existence of God
        - Bavinck is weary to utilize the term; its name can be unsuitable or inappropriate; Proofs do not produce faith, they are testimonies by which God is able to strengthen already-given faith
6.
7.    Only God can name Himself; God's names are His self-revelation; do not reveal His being so much as His accommodation to human language
8.    Yhwh= means strong, high, and faithful One who saves His people; 'One who is'
9.    Negotiation, eminence, causality
10.  "Father" is the supreme revelation of God; is made known to us through Christ through the Holy Spirit-> abundant revelation is trinitarian
11.  Scripture obtains its authority from God
12.  If men believe that the authority rests in them/the church, then they will ensnare themselves and others in absurdities; mocks our faith and is vain
13.  Scripture
14.  Scripture exhibits fully as clear evidence of its own truth; the inward testimony of the Spirit; Holy Spirit puts a seal on the hearts of believing men and guarantees us
15.  They cannot see it; until the Holy Spirit illumines their minds they will waver among doubts
16.  Scripture is superior to all human wisdom, not style but content is decisive, great antiquity of Scripture, truthfulness of Scripture shown by Moses' example, miracles strengthen authority of God's messengers, Moses' miracles are incontestable, prophecies that are fulfilled contrary to all human expectation, God has confirmed prophetic words, transmission of law is to be trusted, God has marvelously preserved the Law and Prophets, simplicity and heavenly character and authority of NT, unvarying testimony of the Church to the Scripture, martyrs died firmly for Scripture doctrine

KO 2 Carkhuff Ch.4

Thoughts on these answers?

1.     What does Carkhuff mean by “We are all losers!” vis a vis attending?-
He means non-attending is self-defeating.  When we don't attend, we communicate that others don't matter and we also fail to learn what they have to offer.

2.     In its broadest sense attending simply means paying attention.

3.     The function of attending for the helper is learning.

4.     According to Carkhuff there are only 3 relationship behavior choices.  What are they?
Fight, Flight, or Relate.

5.     The function of attending for the helpee is involvement.

6.     Be able to list and briefly define the 4 attending skills?
Preparing for attending, attending personally, observing and listening.

7.     List the 3 sub-categories of the first attending skill.
Prepare the context, the helpers, helpee.

8.     Generally speaking what does preparing for attending involve? (Know the 3 categories and what they mean.)
Preparing the helpee- (encourage, inform, engage)
Preparing the context- (neat and orderly, familiar, facilitative context)
Preparing the helper- (relaxing our minds and bodies, reviewing our goals and info)

9.     What are Carkhuff’s 3 summary points of preparing the context (see the elliptical window on p. 62).
Neat and Orderly, Familiar, Facilitative

10.  Attending personally involves proximity and __posturing to give full an undivided attention.

11.  What are the 3 specific helper behaviors of attending personally?
Squaring, leaning, eye contact.

12.  How does Carkhuff define observing (skills), i.e., observing skills involve the helper’s ability to see and understand what 2 helpee factors?
Appearance and behavior.

13.  According to Carkhuff what is the richest source of data concerning helpee feelings?
Facial Expressions

14.  What does Carkhuff mean by incongruence and what does it indicate?
Appearance is not the same as words. It means someone is really in trouble.

15.  What is the overall richest source of helper empathy?
Verbal expressions.

16.  List the 5 components of listening.  (Carkhuff call these methods for developing listening skills.)
  1. Have reason to listen,
  2. Suspend judgment.
  3. Focus on content of helpee.
  4. Recall expressions.
  5. Recall themes.
17.  What is Carkhuff’s reason for listening?
The goal of helping- to gain information.

18.  What does Carkhuff mean by suspending judgment?
to suspend our "inner dialogue"- to hear speakers statements without making judgments, as well as suspending values and attitudes towards the subject.

19.  Which component of listening is the most important and how is it achieved?
Focus on the helpee- quiet without distractions

20.  Define “content.”  Include an explanation of 5WH.
Details of the helpee’s experience- who what when where why how

21.  According to Carkhuff, why do people resist listening?
Carkhuff identifies several possible reasons why people resist listening: 1) we are conditioned not to listen or hear, 2) we distort the messages we do hear for fear of their meaning/implications, 3) we fear intimacy, and 4) we are distracted (possibly because we do not want to listen in the first place).

KO Carkhuff ch.4

hey ya'll...
on #3 is the answer 'learning'??
